چکیده

Earning limits are an interesting novel aspect in the classic Fisher market model. Here sellers have bounds on their income and can decide to lower the supply they bring to the market if income exceeds the limit. Beyond several applications, in which earning limits are natural, equilibria of such markets are a central concept in the allocation of indivisible items to maximize Nash social welfare. In this paper, we analyze earning limits in Fisher markets with linear and spending-constraint utilities. We show a variety of structural and computational results about market equilibria. The equilibrium price vectors form a lattice, and the spending of buyers is unique in nondegenerate markets. We provide a scaling-based algorithm that computes an equilibrium in time O(n` log(` + nU)), where n is the number of agents, ` ≥ n a bound on the segments in the utility functions, and U the largest integer in the market representation. Moreover, we show how to refine any equilibrium in polynomial time to one with minimal prices, or one with maximal prices (if it exists). Finally, we discuss how our algorithm can be used to obtain in polynomial time a 2-approximation for Nash social welfare in multi-unit markets with indivisible items that come in multiple copies.

New Convex Programs and Distributed Algorithms for Fisher Markets with Linear and Spending Constraint Utilities

In this paper we shed new light on convex programs and distributed algorithms for Fisher markets with linear and spending constraint utilities. • We give a new convex program for the linear utilities case of Fisher markets. This program easily extends to the case of spending constraint utilities as well, thus resolving an open question raised by [Vaz10]. • We show that the gradient descent algo...

Continuity Properties of Equilibria in Some Fisher and Arrow-Debreu Market Models

Following up on the work of Megiddo and Vazirani [10], who determined continuity properties of equilibrium prices and allocations for perhaps the simplest market model, Fisher’s linear case, we do the same for: – Fisher’s model with piecewise-linear, concave utilities – Fisher’s model with spending constraint utilities – Arrow-Debreu’s model with linear utilities – Eisenberg-Gale markets.

A New Strongly Polynomial Algorithm for Computing Fisher Market Equilibria with Spending Constraint Utilities

This thesis develops and analyzes an algorithm to compute equilibrium prices for a Fisher market in which the buyer utilities are given by spending constraint functions, utility functions originally defined by Devanur and Vazirani [5]. Vazirani gave a weakly polynomial time algorithm to compute the equilibrium prices [10]. More recently Végh gave a strongly polynomial algorithm [11]. Here we pr...

Approximating the Nash Social Welfare with Budget-Additive Valuations

We present the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for maximizing the Nash social welfare when allocating indivisible items to agents with budget-additive valuation functions. Budgetadditive valuations represent an important class of submodular functions. They have attracted a lot of research interest in recent years due to many interesting applications. For every ε > 0, our algorithm...

Market equilibrium under piecewise Leontief concave utilities

Leontief function is one of the most widely used function in economic modeling, for both production and preferences. However it lacks the desirable property of diminishing returns. In this paper, we consider piecewise Leontief concave (p-Leontief) utility function which consists of a set of Leontief-type segments with decreasing returns and upper limits on the utility. Leontief is a special cas...
